I’ve had a song stuck in my head *all* day. I didn’t even know who it was by until this afternoon when I started singing it during lunch. I hardly ever do that, except in certain company and when the song is so embedded in my head that it comes out of my mouth without me even noticing. It’s from ‘Better Off Dead’ – Van Halen’s ‘Everybody Wants Some.’ Steven thought my impression of Van Halen was pretty entertaining, especially amidst the laughter as I tried very hard to sing and laugh at the same time. I lost it completely when I sang the last line, “I want some tooooooo.” Ah, what fun what fun. At least I was able to download it. I thought if I heard it again it would quit torturing my brain, but I’m still just as addicted. Yes, this holiday season I will not have dreams of dancing sugarplum fairies. Instead, a rock star cheeseburger and his french fry synchronized swimmers.

I put together the new family faux Christmas tree today. Great fun, having my hands ripped up by plastic branches. But now it’s up and waiting to be decorated. I feel better knowing it’s up. It hadn’t felt like Christmas-time yet but now it’s starting to sink in a little more. I even wrapped up and mailed a Christmas present to a friend today! I felt so productive.

Until the cold, sadistic hand of winter took its revenge! We’ve had a torrent of freezing rain today and it all created a thick, invisible coating of ice on every surface outside. I went out to get the mail, thought everything was fine, and then before I knew it was on my hands and knees on the driveway. I slipped and fell so quickly and didn’t even see it coming. I don’t think I’ve ever done that before. I’ve come close, but I’ve always caught myself before. I landed on my right shin and it immediately created a beautiful palette of blues, purples, greens, and reds on my leg. Don’t we all just love winter? 🙂 I’m okay though. I just couldn’t put any serious weight on that leg for a while cause it was all tender, so I sat in the basement and watched an episode of ‘The League of Gentlemen.” One episode and I felt all better.

You know what’s really bothering me? I’m really getting annoyed by NBC. Their “dramas” are just turning into left-wing soap boxes. I don’t mind people having left-wing or right-wing opinions, you can believe anything you want to believe, but it really irks me when people pass it off in pop culture as something hip to agree with. That’s why I cannot stand The West Wing. They had a good idea and they killed it when they started giving that blonde assistant woman all the great political heart-warming speeches. Not to mention when Martin Sheen got all self-righteous. (And don’t even get me started on Sorkin’s writing. Just look at it this way – when you get a group of diverse, well-educated people in one environment, will they really all speak with the same exact quick-wit, constantly-interrupting style? Speech is a highly personalized characteristic, it’s impossible to get a group like that together and have them all sound exactly the same.)

Anyway, back to where I started. I was watching Law & Order tonight and it hit me that they’re doing the exact same thing as West Wing. They’re giving all of the righteous political stances to the new blonde Assistant DA. Tonight’s episode was all about China and its policies on what they were calling “religious oppression.” All of the mid-conservative roles were cast as uncaring, prejudiced, evil capitalists who were only out to protect their own interests. But then the cute blonde woman tries to take a stand, puts on that brave face, and stands up for what’s “right.” What was “right” in this instance was a political opinion, but in pop culture it’s given as a fact. That bugs me. I don’t care what the fact is, what wing it’s coming from, that’s not the proper venue. It’s stupid, it’s self-righteous, and it’s yellow. I just don’t like it. That’s not encouraging people to be open-minded, it’s telling people how to think by showing it as the only good and honorable thing to do.

Same thing goes for Al Gore doing a press loop in his pre-Presidential campaign. He did the same exact thing during the last campaign. Why should voters honestly care about whether or not their candidate was on MTV? Will it change my opinion of his political stance if he wears a nice suit on Letterman? What about his demeanor on Leno? It has absolutely nothing to do with politics. It’s more like doing the rounds to plug a movie. It’s taking advantage of the gullable. Nope, nope, nope, don’t like it.

There. Rant done. 🙂 Sorry, had to get that out of my system.

Tomorrow will be loads of fun. I get to spend the day with two of my favorite kiddies. Hurrah! Max is coming over, as well as the cutest little two-year-old on the planet, Kiersten. Fun, fun, fun. 🙂 Maybe working in the nursery will be a good thing after all.
