While wandering around with Steve on Friday, we eventually got on the topic of what sort of man was my “type”, and I’ve always thought that I don’t really have a “type.” Perhaps I’m just an equal opportunity swooner, but I can’t help wondering if I have a type and I just don’t know it yet. So I’ve decided to come clean. I’ve been compiling a list of the various men I’ve had “crushes” on over the years and perhaps this will provide some insight into my tendencies toward various “types.”
I suspect this list will be quite embarrassing. But eh, I don’t really care, and this should be fairly entertaining. So with no further ado, Heather’s History of Hunks (or not):
2 Years Old: My very first crush was a cute Mormon missionary – he was blonde, sweet, kind of geeky. I lovingly referred to him as Elder Buttons because he always had a spare button or two in his pocket and we’d play tiddlywinks during church. Of course, at this time I was an evil little two-timer. But could you blame me? That John Cusack sure was cute…
3 Years Old: Paul Hogan. It’s the accent, that’s all I can figure. All I can say is, I’m sorry.
4 Years Old: David Bowie. Again, accent, and again, I’m sorry.
5 Years Old: Scott Bakula. This really is getting embarrassing. You might remember Scott Bakula as Dr. Sam Beckett from ‘Quantum Leap.’ The crush developed after the episode where he performed the song, “Great Balls of Fire.” That was my favorite song at the time; to my five year old brain, seeing him perform it meant he wrote it. Thus the crush was born and I wanted to be his special groupie.
6 Years Old: Gregory Peck. ‘Nuff said.
7 Years Old: Patrick Stewart. It was the whole Captain Picard thing. Will Riker may have been cuter, but he was a womanizer. Picard was intelligent, much more respectful, and quite the gentleman. So despite the age gap, I liked him better. (And at this time I’d like to say how glad I am that I kept all this to myself, otherwise I’m afraid I might have been committed.)
8 Years Old: Batman, from the animated series, and I’m not apologizing for this one. He may have been animated, but come on, he was a hunk.
12 Years Old: 9, 10, and 11 are a bit of a blur, so on to Alec Baldwin. I don’t remember what started it, but eh, don’t really have to apologize for that one either.
13 Years Old: Seal, cause I liked his voice.
15 Years Old: Nicolas Cage, the first man I liked for his car.
16 Years Old: An obscure Welsh actor named Ioan Gruffudd. He has a bit of a story. You see, when I was 11, I was playing golf with my Father and I was saying I hoped I would marry a man with a recognizable last name, cause I was sick of everyone mispronouncing ‘Lawver.’ My Father joked that I’d marry some Polish fellow with an unrecognizable last name, to which I replied, ‘No, I will marry Mr. William Patrick Abbernathy.’ The rest of the game we were inventing details of Mr. Abbernathy’s life (he’s an investment banker from Connecticut.) So skip ahead five years and I’m telling this story to my neurotic friend Anna. Her face lights up and she exclaims, “I know who William Patrick Abbernathy is!” She pulls out a picture of Ioan Gruffudd, and sure enough, he looks fairly similar to how I imagined my Mr. Abbernathy. Hence the crush on Ioan Gruffudd, which was really a crush on William Patrick Abbernathy, whoever he is.
17 Years Old: Cary Grant. Up until this point I’d never been a big Cary Grant fan. Then I saw ‘Holiday’ and I was hooked.
18 Years Old: Clive Owen. 🙂 Okay, I’ll admit it, that one lasted for a bit longer than just that year. He’s handsome, he’s got an accent, he drives BMWs, what’s not to love?
Now that I have sufficiently embarrassed myself, I’ll pose the question to you: who did you have crushes on? What does it tell you now about your “type”? And what do you think, am I any closer to finding my type of man? I just hope and pray that I’ve matured a bit since those first few crushes, cause egads, what was I thinking?! 🙂
I think, from the above list, I can summarise your ‘type’ thusly: Rich and Famous. 🙂
Looks like you conveniently forgot about your crush on Doogie Howser 😉
“Better Off Dead” – favorite Cusack flick
psshhhh…
I *still* think John Cusack is hot.
I’m not sure I needed to know that you were seven when Captain Picard hit TV screens 😉
Me, I always had a crush on Col. Dearing on Buck Rogers in the 25th Century. She had great hair.
I love that list. I had a crush on Patrick Stewart, too.
I am glad to know that I was not the only one that had a crush on Patric Stewart.
