‘The Lord of the Rings’ is a great movie for when I’m feeling sick. It’s long enough to keep me occupied, I can just listen to it and still be entertained, and if I fall asleep it’s a-okay. When I wake back up it’ll still be fun to watch. But now that I’ve watched Planet of the Apes and Lord of the Rings again I’m not sure what should be my next Sick Movie. I wish I had Star Wars on DVD – the originals – so I could lay here in bed and watch those. They’re my family’s quintessential Sick Movies. We’d lay an old blanket on the family room floor, dump out our *huge* Lego collection, and then wage our war against germs as we built towns and watched Jedi battle on screen. It was great. I’ve actually had an urge to pull those Legos out again, so maybe this will be another long-haul illness. Maybe I’ll pull them out tomorrow if I can find them, I’ll even have a Star Wars marathon and watch them all the way through. Still, I think I want to get them on DVD. It’s so much easier that way.
But that doesn’t solve my problem tonight. I haven’t been sleeping well and I’ve found it’s easiest to fall asleep if I watch a movie on my laptop and wear my eyes out so I have no choice but to close them and fall asleep. Let’s see what the options are – Entire seasons of ‘The Adventures of Pete and Pete’ and ‘Daria’. A few random episodes of other shows. Shrek, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, Blue Hawaii (Yes, that would be an Elvis movie. It was a phase, don’t blame me.), League of Gentlemen, To Kill a Mockingbird, The Seven Year Itch, The Power of One, and a compilation DVD of the Best Of Atom Films. Hmm. Decisions, decisions…
You know, I also kind of wish I had ‘Guys and Dolls’ on DVD. “Sue Me” just started playing on WinAMP. Frank Sinatra was so cute in that movie, and I’ve always wanted to play Adelaide. I almost got to be in that musical back in Sierra Vista, but then we went and moved. I honestly think overall that ‘Guys and Dolls’ is one of my favorite musicals. It’s not quite so sappy-sicky sweet as some of them, but it still has songs that are fun to sing along to. Now, “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes” is a really tight second, if not a tie for first, just because of the insane materialism of it all. Those songs were hilarious! I’m dying to don a pink dress and have Harry Winston “tell me all about it.”
Hehehe, and “Ain’t There Anyone Here For Love” has to be one of the funniest musical numbers ever. I got that DVD on my last birthday and some friends were over, so we watched it. Basically the number consists of an Mens Olympic team dancing around in teeny beige shorts while Jane Russell prances around them. I think it’s really funny, but when the guys started dancing around a few of the people at the party literally turned to me and went, “Heather! What is this?” Come on, it’s not raunchy, it was made in 1953! It was scandalous for the time, meaning it’d be allowed on Nick, Jr. now. Hehe, and it’s still really funny… It’s too bad I can’t find that song anywhere.
“The Power of One” is good, but I’m not sure I’m in the mood for a serious movie (huh, obviously). I think I’ll go with “The Seven Year Itch.” It’s classic, and Tom Ewell was just way too cute. Not in the normal way, he just played such a great and yet pitious character. And I just love all the spoofs on other old romantic movies, like that classic beach scene in “From Here to Eternity.” I don’t care what anybody else says, I don’t think the movie would have been better if the makers had been allowed to add sleeze or the graphic content of the play. It’s cute just the way it is, thankyouverymuch. 🙂
