I’d love to be able to say that we all made it home safe and sound from San Francisco, but alas, that last half-hour was a doozy. Everything was going fine until a laptop decided to pick up a part-time job as a projectile weapon. A poor older gentleman was trying to get his cane from the overhead compartment to prepare to exit the plane, when suddenly some dope’s laptop came flying out of nowhere. Some man had taken the laptop out of its case and placed it precariously on a coat, so not only was it loose, but it was camoflauged on a slippery surface.
Just as the man reached for his cane, said laptop came flying downward and landed squarely on my mother’s hand with such force that it knocked the battery clear out of the laptop, which went flying toward another passenger’s foot. Even though my Mom was in considerable pain from it hitting her hand, it could have been far worse: she had just lifted her hand for something when the laptop fell, and if her hand hadn’t been there, she would have been hit square on the head.
We got to deplane before everybody else, and while Dad went to get the luggage and the car, Mom and I got to ride in an ambulance. I was with Mom at the ER for a while until Dad arrived. By that point it was 1:30am and I wasn’t feeling too good myself – I woke up rather ill this morning. So thankfully Dad brought me home and then went back to the hospital. They’re still there and I haven’t heard any news yet about whether or not Mom’s hand is broken. I suspect it is because dang did it swell fast. Plus, Mom was in enough pain to be a bit loopy.
I did such a good job at the hospital, though. I was attentive, offered to get Mom whatever she needed, took care of propping her arm up, and even took care of insurance business and registration. Apparently I learned something from all those years of being on the patient-side of things. I’m not used to being the non-sick one in the bunch, though: I had to use the restroom at the hospital, and inside there was a sign that said, “Please ask Nurse if you need to give a urine specimen.” I stopped and thought, “Uh oh, I’d better go ask before I go…” It took me a second to realize that hey, I’m not the sick one this time!
The rest of the trip to San Francisco was fantastic! I got to spend loads of time with Tim, his wife Monica, and their new oh-so-beautiful baby girl, Samantha. Wanna see?

Isn’t she just too cute? I took about a million and one photos of her because I was the official photographer for the expedition. It really was a great trip. Sam has the best disposition; such a happy baby. Monica’s been taking great care of her and is just a wonderful Mother. And Tim, man does that baby love Tim. She lights up as soon as she hears Tim’s voice, it’s the cutest thing.
I also got to spend a day in San Francisco with Tim – we went all around, saw all the basics, I got a picture of the Golden Gate Bridge, I got chocolate in Ghiradelli Square, rode on a Trolly Car, and guess what else. I got to go to Lush!! (If you don’t know, I fell in love with Lush in England about two years ago. They make the world’s greatest soaps and shampoos. Check them out, they’re addictive… in a good way, I promise.) The United States is finally civilized, now that Lush has opened their first store in San Francisco. And guess what?! Washington, DC’s getting one soon!! I’m so excited. 🙂
Well, Mom and Dad just got back from the hospital, so I don’t have to wait up any longer. I’ve been tired since five o’clock this afternoon but I wanted to know what was going on. The doctors said “possible broken wrist” but they’ll have clearer results in the morning, once the radiologist looks at the x-rays. *sigh* I bet United Airlines isn’t happy about that dork with the loose laptop.
Good night!
Awww, that’s a great photo of a very cute baby! Thanks for sharing. And welcome back. 🙂
Sorry to hear about your mom’s hand. And the nasty part is, those tiny little wrist bones don’t get a lot of blood flow, so it takes forever for them to heal. I broke my wrist on my mission, and that was really no fun!
Awww that baby is soooo cute!
Hope your moms okay! My mum is ill at the moment! 🙁
Bye bye xxx
