Holy, holy crap, Michael Schumacher is coming back to race in Formula 1!!!!!!!!!!
I can’t even believe it! Literally just last night I was talking with Jimi about all the rumors that had been floating around that Schumi might be brought in to replace Felipe for the rest of the season. But I was going on and on how that would never happen. After all, Schumi’s been gone since 2006, hasn’t raced at all, hasn’t even driven the current F1 car, hasn’t been through training, and he’s 40 years old now. You can’t just one day decide that you’re going to leap from retirement back into an F1 car, it doesn’t work that way. Even though it’s technically the same racing circuit, the cars each season are changed almost completely; the car Felipe’s been driving this year is so utterly different from what Schumi was driving even three years ago. It takes months and months to really fine tune those cars to the driver, and if ever there was a perfectionist when it comes to the mechanics of his racecar, it’s Michael Schumacher. Not only is he a legendary racer, he’s also a certified mechanic. He’s just as legendary for how picky he is when it comes to making sure absolutely everything on his racecar is perfect, that his body is in absolute perfect condition to control that car, and that he’s as close to the perfect racer as it’s possible for him to be. It was that pursuit of perfection that led to him winning the Formula 1 World Championship an unprecedented seven times! I have absolutely no idea how he’ll be able to attain the perfection I know he requires of himself and his team in only a month.
But my oh my, won’t it be fun to watch him try! 🙂
This is just so amazing I can’t pick my jaw up off the floor. To get to see Michael Schumacher race again… and perchance beat Lewis Hamilton? 🙂 Ooh wouldn’t that be the sweetest tale of comeback in racing history!!
This past week has been an awfully tough one for the tifosi, the devoted fans of Ferrari Formula 1. Watching Felipe Massa’s crash wrenched the heart of this tifosa, I can tell you that. But wow, it certainly brightens the spirit to find that of all the drivers who could have filled Felipe Massa’s shoes, it’s going to be Michael Schumacher. What a tale of absolute loyalty, devotion, and friendship, that Michael Schumacher’s willing to come out of retirement – and in a way, risk his reputation – to care for the car and team of his former team mate. Felipe Massa sacrificed a lot to support Michael back in 2006, setting aside his own hopes for glory so that his team mate would have the best chance for a successful swan song in his final season. This is a remarkable and beautiful gesture that now, in Massa’s time of need, Michael will step in to repay the favor. Talk about class. I just can’t wait to see it. I’m sure that Schumacher will make Massa proud.
More good news, Massa’s condition is certainly improving and he was released from intensive care today. Miraculously, his doctors are reporting that Massa hasn’t lost any sight in his left eye, which was a serious, serious concern given the extent of his injuries and the early reports we received that surgeons had to remove bones from his left eye socket. But all is well with his vision, which is remarkably good news.
Furthermore, he seems to be doing incredibly well mentally. Two days following his surgery, Massa received visitors from Ferrari and he was able to communicate clearly with all of them, switching effortlessly between three languages. Trust me, that’s yet another absolutely miraculous bit of news! Clearly any brain damage he may have suffered seems to have been minimal, thank heaven.
All of this seems to bode well for an eventual return to racing, which would be absolutely wonderful. I was so worried he wouldn’t be able to get behind the wheel, but so far so good. Doctors are saying that he could be released from the hospital within the next ten days, walking out on his own two feet. Great news, but I’m still going to keep on praying that his recovery continues to go as smoothly as possible Although it’s wonderful to have Schumi back, I want to see Massa back behind the wheel! 🙂
I’ll see you – and Michael Schumacher (!!!!!) – at next month’s European Grand Prix!! Eeeee, I can’t wait!!!!
