I really love my friends. I have the coolest, most eclectic group of friends on the planet. And you know what the best thing about them is? The minute I need something, they’re right there to help.
Prime example of this amazing trait is my dear friend Casey – she’s a teacher, and she has so beautifully volunteered to help me out with my latest television show idea. Know how I was stressing about Dean not getting it? Well now he’ll have the most extensive instantaneous focus group research ever compiled in the history of 18-year-old television producers. Casey has been kind enough to give me her own opinion on the show’s entertainment and educational aspects (which, I might add, has been extremely positive.) And then, on Monday, she’ll tell the story to the kids in her class and get feedback from them. I can take all of that to Dean next week whenever we meet up and go, “See? See? Told you!”
Want to know something else cool? My new friends are nice too. This nice random man emailed me a few days ago to let me know where I can reach Terry Gilliam so I can see what I can do to get one of his projects off the ground. Half of me is all excited about this, since the project is very close to my heart – Mr. Gilliam’s been trying to make the book ‘Good Omens’ into a movie for ages, but funding keeps falling through. I love that book! The other half of me, however, is laughing at myself, thinking, “What could you possibly do? That’s Terry Gilliam, surely he’s more connected than *you* are.” But, then again, I bet Terry Gilliam doesn’t have his own super fantastic all-powerful Translating Drew. 🙂 And who does? I do! So, if I can work up the guts, I’ll see if I can get Mr. Gilliam on the phone to discuss what we can both do to get ‘Good Omens’ off the ground. But you know what would be *really* cool? If, in exchange for me finding funding for his film, he would be magnanimous enough to direct the first movie-length episode of my TV show idea… How much you wanna bet that if I can get Terry Gilliam commited to my TV project, that everything will click with Dean and he’ll be happy to do the project? I think if I got Terry Gilliam on board then that would be proof enough that the show would be appealing.
You know what else is fun? Random people. My Mom and my Grandmother went off today to go meet some distant cousin, and it turns out she’s the producer for Voice of America. Mom told her the idea, and guess what? My distant cousin loved it! She also happens to be very good friends with the head of Discovery International, and she said she’d poke around and see what she could come up with. Gotta love random people! 🙂 At this same family meeting, Mom also met a friend of the cousin who’s the head of some big dance studio in New York City. She got all excited about the idea of entertaining, mainstream cultural education and said that if we ever wanted to do anything in New York for the TV show that we should just give her a call and she’d arrange it. Random people rule!
More good news: my new silk blouse is in the works. I had to buy some new silk for it today because all of the silks I got in California were too… linear and geometric. The more precise the pattern, the more difficult it is to sew properly and get it to look right. So instead I found this beautiful stuff at G-Street Fabrics that has beautiful blues, purples, whites, and a hint of pink in a non-geometric print. I’m very pleased with it, even though the price was a bit unexpected. I had no idea that stuff in California was *that* cheap…
The final bit of news for the day is that, speaking of ‘Good Omens’, I finally got the red vinyl I need for my costume for all those anime conventions! In case you’re new, my brother sells 3d artwork at anime conventions, and in order to attract more attention to his booth, he and I will be dressing up in costume. We’ll be half of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, as described in Good Omens – he’ll be Pollution (dressed in white), and I’ll be War (dressed in blood-red, and carrying a really big sword – Mmm, weaponry.) I’m really excited about the vinyl because I got it at 50% off and it’s the absolute perfect shade!! I even stayed within my costume budget, which makes me really happy indeed. Now I just need to figure out how to make the coat. *sigh*
Good luck in your attempts to work with Terry Gilliam. He’s one of my favorite directors. I must say that Time Bandits, which I watched a few days ago, was a bit of a stinker though. I’ve enjoyed pretty much all of his other work that I’ve seen, though, especially 12 Monkeys and Brazil.
Hi! I guess I’m another random person… …but anyway… I just wanted to say that I think it’s amazing how you’re working on your TV series at only 18. I’m 17 and I’ve written my first book, but I’m certain I’m nowhere near as successful as you are. Just wanted to wish you luck with everything, and also to say that I think crazy educational TV is the best kind. Kids are crazy little people– trying to teach them in a serious way is like speaking Spanish to a Chinese person…given that the Chinese person doesn’t know Spanish. Ok, bad example. 🙂 Well, good luck!!
