After my discovery on the third (okay, technically, in Heather Time it was still Tuesday the second, since I hadn’t gone to sleep yet and therefore hadn’t woken up to a new day), I got a really huge craving for root beer. Gee, who would have guessed it? Later on Wednesday evening, the craving came to a head. I was driving around at 9:30 at night with my Mom, taking care of some errands before it was time to pick Steven up from a Phi Theta Kappa meeting. Suddenly, as we were driving back to pick up Steve at long last, I blurted out, “I’m hungry!” This wasn’t too surprising as I had only eaten one meal that day and it was cut short. Having heard this, Mom resounded, “I’m hungry too!”
Naturally, I voiced my craving. Next thing I knew, Steven was in the car and we were all heading to Sweetwater Tavern. Originally we were just going to go to the bar inside, get some root beer, and fill ourselves with yummy fabulous bread that’s free. But, once we got inside, Mom and I realized just how hungry we really were. Several root beers, some ozzie rolls, one cheeseburger, and a loaded baked potato later, we felt so much better.
However, Mom’s baked potato had a problem. She found something hard and flat inside the potato and it really grossed her out. I swear it was just the eye of the potato, but she seems to think it was some kind of squashed bug. In fact, even the manager of the restaurant came over to assure her it was just a natural part of the potato and that it was not a bug at all. Mom was still grossed out. Sweetwater, being as fabulous as they are, went to great lengths to make sure Mom was happy despite the fact they had done nothing wrong. So you know what they did? They gave us a card for two free desserts! Huzzah! We were too full to eat them that evening, so we decided to keep it for later.
Not much later, though. The next night, none of us felt like cooking, so we all went out to Sweetwater AGAIN cause, you guessed it, I wanted more root beer and ozzie rolls. (Ozzie rolls, by the way, are a creation exclusive to the company that owns Sweetwater. They’re lovely little round things that are flash-fried and they’re oh so fantastic.) So back we went, got more root beer, split two hamburgers between the four of us at the table, and then got two free desserts. It’s really quite reasonable and by the time I’ve had three root beers, a bunch of ozzie rolls, half a burger, and a warm flourless chocolate waffle, I’m so full I only have to eat one meal the next day. Normally I don’t really like eating; it’s messy, it usually makes me sick (thank you, IBS), and it’s just so boring. Sweetwater’s the only place where I really enjoy eating, the only place where I actually fill myself up all the way.
Hehe, and guess what else… I get to go again tomorrow! Hooray for root beer!
Okay, time for an update on the ‘Good Omens’ project. Neil Gaiman was sweet enough to direct me toward the film’s producer, Peter Samuelson. As I said a few days ago, Mr. Samuelson wrote back and filled me in on the latest news from the production, but I can’t tell you, so nyuh (*insert sound effect of tongue sticking out*). But, Mr. Samuelson also added something else to his email – he started asking me about if I would be willing to get involved with one of his many charities, First Star. It’s based right out of DC, near where I live. I’m not sure exactly what it is that he has in mind, but whatever it is I’m sure it’ll be exciting. After all, he has set up a meeting between me and the CEO of the organization. And, the next time he’s in DC he wants to meet with me to discuss things further. Somehow I don’t think they want me to just make the coffee for the office. I doubt gophers go in for meetings with the CEO.
I got an email from the CEO and she has asked that I call her this Wednesday to pick the time, date, and place for the meeting. I’m really looking forward to it. I’ve read a bit about First Star and they seem to be doing some really fantastic stuff. All about rights for children and fixing up the state and federal child care programs (i.e. foster care). I think it’s something I could really get behind and support 100%. Now I just have to wait and see what Mr. Samuelson wants me to do. As long as I believe I’ll be able to do what he asks of me, I’ll do it. It’s a good program and I’d love to help.
So, that’s what’s developed from the ‘Good Omens’ emails. Not really what I expected, but you know how much I love happy random things. Especially happy random things that are for a good cause. This week should be interesting.
Non-profit and not-for-profit organizations are great. Volunteering for them really makes the head honchos happy, and besides giving you the internal warm & fuzzy feeling, they do wonders for real-world experience.
And root beer is pretty sweet, I had a few bottles of IBC tonight 😉
I have one thing to say: Yay for root beer!!
