I don’t know what hit me. I swear, it was beyond my control, there was no way to predict it. I was just sitting here at my computer, minding my own business, when suddenly I was struck with this overwhelming urge to doodle.

As of Sunday night, I was oblivious to the fact that Monday was Valentine’s Day. I gave it some thought, realized that I don’t really like that holiday, and considered writing a blog rant about it. But, eh, that’d be so expected. So instead, I took that urge to doodle, and I channelled it.

That’s when the cuteness took over. The watercolor pencils in my hand moved and moved and created these odd little monster/critter things that were so simple, and yet so cute. Hence the little Valentine’s Day card that appeared on my blog yesterday. Yes, I have to come clean, I’m responsible for that despicable display of sappiness.

and sometimes it’s
full of crap

Worse still, the cuteness didn’t stop there. I think I’m addicted. That night and on through the next day I just kept drawing. I showed a few people – most of whom were men – and all of them pretty much said the same thing: “That’s nice and all, but what’s gotten into you?” The only explanation I can think of is that for years I’ve wished I could draw cute little doodles like my brother Steven. That guy’s a master at drawing the simplest little things and filling them to the brim with personality.

But on Sunday night, I created cute doodles of my own! This may sound totally stupid, but I’m so proud of myself. So proud, in fact, that I couldn’t stop. My friend Stephen started suggesting less sicky-sweet captions and suddenly my cute characters took on a whole new meaning. (Check out his first suggestion.) So I’ve decided to start a little website for these little critters where people can suggest captions and I’ll draw cartoons to match. Been dumped recently? Have something horrible to say about love? Send it my way and I’ll pair it with an inexplicably cute cartoon. That contradiction makes me laugh, hopefully it’ll make someone else laugh too.
So check it out, let me know what you think, and suggest a caption or two. It’ll be fun, I promise.

P.s. Tonight I took my doodles a step farther and ended up with a colored pencil self-portrait. The proportions are all wrong, but I’ve never drawn anything like this before! Even though I’m sure any 6th grader could do a better job, I’m pleased as punch. Naturally I have to post it here. Take a look, will you?
