Marcel Marceau died yesterday. Fittingly, I can’t think of much to say, except that I’m surprised how sad I am that he’s gone. I was never a huge mime fan – I do at least like them ten times more than I like clowns. But I dunno, there was just something so effortlessly cool about Marceau. And one of my favorite family memories has to do with him: when my oldest brother was a toddler, my parents dressed him up as Marcel Marceau for Halloween. They thought he was very cute and they were very proud of themselves, but ultimately they were disappointed when not a single person recognized him as Marceau. They weren’t disappointed with the costume, rather, extremely surprised that so few people knew who Marceau was and what he meant to the world. Most didn’t even know what a mime was! |
| Apart from being a brilliant mime, Marcel did remarkable things during World War II. He saved the lives of countless children when he was still only a child himself. He was a brave man who changed our perceptions of life, communication, and love. So I guess, at a moment when most other people would have a moment of silence in their honor, maybe we should have a moment of really loud laughter to honor Marceau and the happiness he brought to so many people around the world. That just seems more fitting to me. So have a good giggle for Marcel; I’m sure he’d love it. | |

Hmm, I wonder if that Halloween costume contributed to him being in the mime troupe in high school. I can’t think of any other explanation.
We’re losing another friend: the Board. Guestbook.de is shutting down its guestbook service. It’ll be read-only for another two weeks, and I can download all the posts, but strangely… it will be no more.
